Depth before polish means checking your true machining depth before worrying about making it look good. This avoids wasted time, scrap, and premature finishing.
By Ms Nuraan Fakier, MD, Laser
When machining or engraving, the depth of a feature, be it engraving, pocketing, or marking, directly affects how the finished part works or fits. If the depth is wrong, no amount of polish or surface finish will fix the underlying problem.
Shops often rush to polish or finish a piece for inspection or dispatch, but correcting a depth mistake after this wastes material, operator time, and sometimes the job itself. This step is critical for CNC routers, fibre laser markers, mills, and engravers, especially where jobs are repeated or need tight fits.
Checking and confirming the correct depth before any final surface finishing saves rework. This applies to marking serials or logos, engraving plates, or machining pockets.
Here’s a practical approach to make sure your depth is correct before you move on to polish or finishing:
If you’re unsure about depth settings, tool offsets, or how to measure accurately on your Feature Router, Mill, Lathe, or Engraver, send us a message using our contact form. We can advise the method and kit for your machine family.
Ask about sample programs, calibration blocks, or the best ways to handle depth checks for your specific application. We can also talk through edge-finding, probe routines, or how to handle re-checks after controller interruptions or outages.
We often see sites polish or finish before confirming the cut or engraving is deep enough, only to find out at assembly or handover that it’s out of spec.
Another common error is not re-checking depth after a power cut or losing machine position. Always re-home, confirm your zero, and measure again, especially if your site experiences outages or the controller is on a UPS.
