What the Feature Lathe Compact’s main specs mean in your shop

The compact swing of this lathe is ideal for short shafts, bushes, and common repair jobs where you don’t need big diameters or long beds. The 3-jaw class chuck covers most everyday turning needs, gripping round bar and common billets securely for light to medium cuts.

A live centre tailstock makes it easier to support longer or flexible workpieces, especially during repair or when machining slender shafts. It’s practical for workshops handling breakdown jobs, maintenance tasks, and small repeat runs that dont justify a full production CNC lathe.

With stock held in Gauteng, quick access and reduced downtime are possible for most workshops in the Highveld and surrounds. Regular cleaning and oiling of the ways and chuck will keep the machine running smoothly, especially in dusty or dry winter conditions.

Site requirements for smooth operation

The Feature Lathe Compact runs on standard South African three-phase (400 V, 50 Hz). Fitment and any rewiring must be done by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance, as required under SANS 10142-1.

Plan for enough space around the machine for loading workpieces, safe operator movement, and access to the tailstock. Allow room for cleaning and maintenance, particularly near the chuck and ways. Place the lathe on a level, solid floor to avoid vibration.

Extraction is not mandatory for general turning, but if you machine materials like brass, plastics or cast iron, consider using local dust or chip collection to keep the area tidy and reduce slip hazards.

Tooling, options and care accessories

Standard tooling for this lathe family includes turning tools, boring bars, and the matched 3-jaw chuck. For holding longer parts, the live centre tailstock cue is fitted as standard, making set-ups for shaft work quick and repeatable.

We recommend adding a soft jaw set for the chuck if you often do second-ops or delicate parts. Keep a labelled insert shadow board or drawer storage for your cutters and spares to avoid confusion between materials and tip profiles.

Wipe the ways regularly and keep the chuck lightly oiled, especially in coastal cities like Durban or Gqeberha where salt air speeds up rust on exposed steel. A simple cover or sheet over the bed at night will also help.
