Jewellery crest run

A jewellery studio in Gauteng needed to engrave batch runs of crests with sharp, repeatable detail on small metal blanks. Consistency and setup speed were key requirements.

The studio’s need for batch crest engraving

This Gauteng jewellery workshop had a steady order for custom crests, mostly for schools and local clubs. Each crest needed to be clear and uniform, with no deep or shallow marks. The orders came in medium batches, with short lead times and strict quality checks.

Hand engraving was too slow and inconsistent for these runs, especially when the studio had new staff cycling in on different shifts. They needed an engraving process that could keep every line the same, make setup fast, and avoid scrap.

Feature Engraver Pro and depth control for repeat work

We recommended the Feature Engraver Pro, set up in a small bay with good lighting and a clamp tray for holding the blanks. A key part of the setup was the adjustable depth stop, which limits cutter travel for each pass, helping new or rotating operators avoid mistakes.

The engraver runs with V and ball-nose cutters, and we matched the tray to the studio’s main blank sizes in aluminium and brass. We also added a simple vacuum pad and staged-filter Dust Cell to help capture fine metal dust at source, which is important under the local chemical agent regulations.

Early results and changes after real production

After the first few weeks, output was steadier, and training time dropped. The depth stop meant that even less experienced operators could finish batches with almost no rejects. Cleaning between runs took less time because the Dust Cell caught most of the dust at the cutter.

One unexpected snag was dirty contacts from fine aluminium dust. A quick switch to weekly vacuuming around the engraver tray sorted it out. The studio also introduced a basic shadow board for tools and cutters, so everything stayed in its place and setup stayed quicker.

Advice for similar jewellery and awards shops

Batch crest engraving in metals works best with a dedicated machine and proper dust control, especially in Joburg’s dry, dusty winter. Use labelled trays and shadow boards so anyone can set up the run, even if your team changes.

If you are running jobs on aluminium or brass, keep contacts and ways clean and oiled, and check your dust extraction filters often. A stop for every depth is worth the small extra setup time when consistency matters for your customers.
