Filter change timing

Dust filter changes are easy to miss, but letting them slip leads to blocked extraction, motor strain or even operator health risks. Stick to a simple, visible system.

Why filter changes matter on South African floors

Dust and fume extraction only works as well as its filters. Blocked filters choke airflow, so dust escapes or motors overheat. In places like Gauteng with its fine dust, or KZN’s sea air, filters can clog or grow mildew in a few weeks if left unchecked.

When a filter is overdue, you usually notice a stale smell, weak extraction, or a change in machine noise. If left too long you risk breaching the exposure limits set by the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents. Downtime is only part of it, wood dust, metal fines or fume in the air put your staff at risk, and OHS inspectors do check filter records.

A step by step filter change routine that works

In a small team, you need a routine that survives shift changes and power cuts. Here’s the simplest method I know for our Feature Dust Cell and similar systems, you can adapt it for any extraction bay.

The trick is to keep the record at the machine, not in the office or on someone's phone. Update it immediately after the filter goes in.

What to ask us or your technician if you’re not sure

If you’re unsure which filter stage your extraction system needs, just send us a message through our contact form. We keep records for every Feature Dust Cell we’ve sold, so we can match your filter pack by serial number.

Ask about safe disposal of used filters, especially if you’re cutting hazardous material like MDF or acrylic. If you have odd smells, short filter life or airborne dust even after a change, our team can help you check for leaks, wrong filter order or worn seals.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

People often forget to change filters after a week with power cuts, or when staff rotate. The usual mistake is leaving the record in the office or not writing clear dates. I sometimes see a doubled filter stage because someone installed the wrong pack, or put a new filter over an old one and didnt check the fit.

Never blow out a dirty filter with compressed air, it just puts the dust back in the workshop and can damage the filter media. Always check the filter orientation, and replace with the right stage in the correct order. If you run coastal or humid, check for mildew on the filter shell or in the tray.
