Friday spindle resets keep your CNC router or mill ready for Monday, preventing toolholder jams, collet wear and startup delays after a busy week.
By Mr Ashlin Gounden, MD, Service
In South African workshops, dust, humidity and quick job changes can leave spindle assemblies in poor shape by the end of the week. Highveld dust creeps into collets and fans, while coastal plants in Durban or Gqeberha deal with sweat and rust. Power cuts mean you can’t always count on electronic reminders or shared digital logs.
A spindle that isn’t checked weekly can build up fine grit, stick with old lubricant, or see a forgotten tool left in the taper. By Monday, you risk tool runout, poor grip, vibration, or even a spindle fault. A reset on Friday clears out the week’s grime and mistakes, keeping downtime and setup struggles low.
I recommend making the following checks and actions before you clock off. Write them up next to the machine or keep a printout in the tool crib. Always lock out the machine for safety before opening doors or covers.
If you’re not sure about spindle noise, vibration or collet selection, ask us or your technician. We can advise on the right collet size for your cutters, oiling intervals for your climate, and whether you need a spindle rebuild.
You can also send us a message from our contact form for advice if you’ve had repeat faults, low clamping force, or see scoring inside the taper. Our team can guide you on spindle kits, collet trays and best practice for your equipment family.
Many teams skip the weekly reset, only checking spindles when something goes wrong. Leaving cutters or holders in the spindle over the weekend causes spring collets to stick, or lets rust start under coastal conditions.
Another mistake is using dirty or oily compressed air, which blows more grime into the spindle than it removes. Storing collets loose or wiping with old rags brings grit right back into the taper. Keep your reset practical and stick to the routine, it pays off in uptime and finish quality.
