Pretoria Highveld dust

Dry Highveld winters in Pretoria send fine red dust through every corner of an inland workshop, challenging both CNC output and surface quality unless dust is properly managed.

A busy Pretoria plant faced relentless dust

On the Highveld near Pretoria, winter brings a constant haze of fine red dust that finds its way into every gap. One inland fabrication plant struggled with this reality for years. Their CNC router and plasma table produced more airborne fines, but the real problem was the dust settling on parts, panels waiting for dispatch and sensitive machinery.

Operators often had to pause production to wipe down surfaces or clean control panels. Bearings needed attention more often and customers started to notice scratched finishes on delivered cabinets and fixtures. The plant’s health and safety file also flagged wood and composite dust exposure as a compliance risk.

Installing a staged dust cell to capture fines

We recommended and installed a Feature Dust Cell with staged filters, placing its extraction ports close to the main dust sources on the router, plasma and bench areas. The unit’s primary filter stage handles coarse chips while the finer stages mop up airborne fines before they can settle. Flexible ducting allowed the team to reconfigure as workflow changed, covering both hand tool benches and busy CNC bays.

We added a vacuum table pad for the Feature Router 1212 and a dust-proof collet tray to keep cutters clean. The main extraction unit outlets were routed above head height to avoid blowing dust across the shop, and the filter stage pack made filter swaps simple.

Cleaner bays and fewer machine faults after a month

Within the first weeks, operators reported clearer sightlines and far less dust on control screens and moving parts. Panel finishing time dropped as less rework was needed to buff out scratches. The machine tool changer and rails required less frequent cleaning and there was noticeably less downtime for bearing changes.

Air sampling at the end of the month showed that airborne particulate levels stayed well below the occupational exposure limits set in the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents. The housekeeping team found routine sweeping much easier, since most dust was caught at source rather than allowed to settle everywhere.

Lessons for inland workshops dealing with dust

Pretoria’s Highveld climate means that dust is a year-round concern, especially during dry spells. Workshop owners running CNC routers, plasma or any equipment that cuts or abrades material should consider extraction that tackles both chips and fine airborne dust.

A staged dust cell is well suited to medium to large plants with multiple bays, especially those working with wood, composites or powdery offcuts. For smaller shops, even a single-port extractor near the dirtiest process can make a real difference. Always check that extraction meets the legal limits for dust exposure and maintain filters to keep performance up.
