Designed for signage, cabinetry and detailed routing

Feature Router 1212 gives shops a full CNC routing platform in a footprint that fits smaller workspaces. It is built for signmakers, cabinet makers, fixture shops, training centres and production managers who need accurate part machining without a large machine bay.

The 2.2 or 3.0 kW class spindle matches the demands of composite panels, MDF, softwoods, hardwoods, plastics and thin aluminium, making it suitable for everything from letters and panels to cabinet doors and fixture blanks.

Best suited materials and practical part sizes

The 1200 by 1200 mm bed covers most standard signage sheets, compact cabinetry components, point-of-sale displays, jigs and engraved plates. You can clamp, vacuum or fixture sheets for jobs like router-cut logos, joinery parts or custom inlays.

Operators get optimal results in MDF, veneered boards, acrylic, PVC foam, laminates, dibond, melamine and plywood. It is not intended for heavy steel, thick plate or parts longer than 1200 mm. For daily cutting in metals above 3 mm or sheets over 1200 mm width, a bigger CNC or plasma table is advised.

Preparation requirements before installation

Installers will need clear, level access for delivery, with at least 1.5 by 1.5 metres of floor space and extra room for operator movement. The machine must stand on a solid surface, not thin tiles or suspended floors.

Power supply must be checked in advance: most Router 1212s run on 230 V single-phase, but check before installation. All new wiring must be done by a registered electrician in line with SANS 10142-1, who must issue a Certificate of Compliance. Dust extraction is strongly recommended to meet occupational limits for wood dust and keep the rails and vacuum bed clean. Plan for a suitable extractor or a Feature Dust Cell on the machine stub.

Tooling is not included by default. Prepare a basic set of V bits, end mills and an ER collet set matched to your spindle. USB and pendant control is straightforward, but have a UPS for the control PC to prevent data loss during power cuts.

A typical job in a Gauteng sign shop

A Highveld signage team receives a job for branded acrylic panels. They clamp or vacuum-hold 3 mm acrylic sheets on the Router 1212 bed and load the cut file using the USB port. The operator selects a sharp 3 mm end mill, checks the spindle clamp and work zero, then sets the dust stub for clean extraction.

During a power outage later in the day, the controller is kept on a UPS. The operator waits for power to return, re-homes the axes, and re-checks the work zero before resuming cutting. Finished parts are handed over, edges are flame-polished, and the shop sweeps up fine dust with extraction running.

Common early issues and how to prevent them

Most first-month problems trace to dust buildup, unprotected rails or blunt tooling. Make daily cleaning and routine oiling part of the shift handover, especially in dry seasons or at the coast where static and corrosion are risks.

Incorrect workpiece clamping causes vibration, poor edge quality or even part movement during cuts. Use vacuum pads or clamp trays for thin or flexible materials. If power cuts are frequent, always use a UPS and teach operators to safely home and check zero points after each interruption.

Worn collets or missed extraction setup can quickly affect cut quality and machine life. Keep spares on hand and review operator training to match OSH Act requirements for safe, competent use.
