Coastal plant
A Durban workshop near the port had ongoing issues from coastal dust clogging filters and rusting metalwork. We helped them overhaul their maintenance routine and CNC bay setup for the local climate.
This Durban CNC workshop sits less than five kilometres from the beachfront, right in the path of the salty, humid air and fine dust that drifts in with every breeze. Their mix of routers, a plasma table, and a small machining centre was constantly fighting against sticky residue, quick rusting on exposed guides, and air filters clogging much faster than in inland shops.
The plant manager needed a way to cut overtime on cleaning, reduce unplanned stops for filter changes, and keep electrical panels and rails free from corrosion. The team also noticed that the floor needed sweeping far more often, and any downtime meant more dust settling on beds, spindles, and contact surfaces.
We recommended a staged approach for the bay layout and machine upkeep. Extraction was upgraded with a Feature Dust Cell for each CNC router and the engraver, capturing dust at source rather than letting it spread. Service teams ran new ducting with smooth bends and easy-access filter trays, designed for fast daily checks in humid conditions.
All exposed rails and screws were treated with a corrosion inhibitor, and we supplied fitted covers for the Feature Mill 3-Axis and Feature Plasma Compact to keep salty air away after hours. Electrical cabinets got small dehumidifiers and seal checks. We trained supervisors on how to spot early signs of corrosion and filter clogging, vital on the KZN coast.
Within weeks, filters stayed cleaner and needed changing less often, and operators reported much less dust on the floor and machine beds. Most importantly, there were no new rust spots or sticky build-up on the guides. The service team could do a full inspection and wipe-down in less than half the usual time.
Electrical faults from salt air dropped off, thanks to the dehumidifiers and better cabinet seals. Operators found it easier to spot issues early, as filter trays were moved to eye level and labelled for daily sign-off. The plant manager said downtime from cleaning and minor faults was now rare, especially during stormy weeks when salt and fine dust used to be worst.
If your shop is anywhere along the KZN coast, look at extraction and corrosion control as a priority. Dust cells and fitted covers pay for themselves quickly by cutting downtime and cleaning hours.
Routine checks make the biggest difference: inspect rails weekly, wipe down beds daily, and keep filter trays easy to access. In Durban’s climate, prevention is always easier than repair, especially once salt spray and wet dust find a way in.
